for planning and designing new software and web applications.
Analyzes, tests and assists with the integration of new
applications. Oversees the documentation of all development
activity. Trains non-technical personnel. Assists with tracking

DescriptionXUMO is hiring a Principal Server Engineer to join their
backend service development team, designing and developing
microservices that power our industry leading Free Ad Supported
Streaming Television service, available on client devices including
Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Chromecast, Smart TV, iOS and Android.The
XUMO server team is responsible for the design and operation of a
range of critical core components including media content ingestion
systems, integration with proprietary video encoding services,
highly available high traffic web service endpoints,
recommendations systems and large-scale batch data exports.As
Principal Server Engineer you will work closely with other
development teams, product management and QA to take product
requirements, determine impact and level of effort, propose
detailed technical solutions, and implement changes as part of the
server backend development team using an Agile/Scrum
process.Position is office based in Irvine, CA- 4 days/week & 1
day/week remote.Required experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology,
or related field
- 10+ years qualified experience with Java, with JEE and/or
Spring, Spring Boot
- 5+ years Database expertise SQL (e.g. MySQL), NoSQL (e.g.
MongoDB)
- Strong experience with batch processes (e.g. Spring batch)
- 3+ years Kubernetes (GKE/EKS), working with Docker
containers
- Message queuing services such as RabbitMQ, Kafka
- Cloud services (Google Cloud/Amazon Web Services)
- Development of RESTful webservices
- Proficient in data structures, memory optimization and code
performance techniques
- Data representation formats such as JSON, XML
- Strong analytics, problem solving and communication
skillsDesirable experience:
- Experience with services utilizing content delivery networks
(CDN)
- Knowledge of Video Encoding / streaming
- Experience with microservice architectureCore Responsibilities
- Collaborates with project stakeholders to identify product and
technical requirements. Conducts analysis to determine integration
needs.
- Designs new software and web applications, supports
applications under development and customizes current applications.
Develops software update processes for existing applications.
Assists in the roll-out of software releases.
- Trains junior Software Development Engineers on internally
developed software applications.
- Oversees the researching, writing and editing of documentation
and technical requirements, including software designs, evaluation
plans, test results, technical manuals and formal recommendations
and reports.
- Keeps current with technological developments within the
industry. Monitors and evaluates competitive applications and
products. Reviews literature, patents and current practices
relevant to the solution of assigned projects.
- Assists with technical leadership throughout the design process
and assists in guidance with regards to practices, procedures and
techniques. Serves as a guide mentor for Software Development
Engineers.
- Assists in tracking and evaluating performance metrics. Ensures
team delivers software on time, to specification and within
budget.
- Works with Quality Assurance team to determine if applications
fit specification and technical requirements. Tests and evaluates
systems, subsystems and components.
- Acts as a technical contact and liaison for outside vendors
and/or customers.
- Presents and defends architectural, design and technical
choices to internal and external audiences.
- Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in
matters of significance.
- Regular, consistent and punctual attendance. Must be able to
work nights and weekends, variable schedule(s) and overtime as
necessary.
